Summer Break...Sort Of

One thing they don't tell you in college, once you graduate there are no more breaks. I'm fine with that I guess. I like staying busy. So far so good since graduation though.

I haven't found a job in Searcy just yet but I am waiting to hear pretty soon on some applications. Nicki and I decided recently that we want to make family a greater focus. We have been so busy with school and the transition to her job in Little Rock that we feel it would be best if both of us could work in Searcy. I am still preaching for now and Nicki had been planning on leaving TLamar once she found a job here but that got sped up by recent events.

Last week, Nicki was fired from TLamar. It's a long story that isn't worth going into here but sufice to say it was no fault of her's. Either way, it doesn't change our plans so far. May have been a little bit quicker than we would've liked but God has a plan. Nicki is actually excited about doing something a little different for the sake of being closer to home. We are both hoping to hear something real soon and we will keep you posted on all the changes.

As for me, I am working but not for a paycheck. I am the Graduate Assitant at Upward Bound at Harding. UB is a program designed for high schoolers with no college background (no family memebers attended). We help them get prepared for college and work to make them more successful students. I am a receptionist most of the time, but on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I teach the Senior Enrichment class at the Summer Academy. I show the seniors what college is like by introducing them to offices and administrators around campus. I love it!!

The Glover's are changing yet again and still getting ready for our newest addition. Nicki is 21 weeks along now with our.....drumroll.......BOY!!! Yes we are having a boy. Steven Thomas Glover will be here on October 13ish. We are getting his room ready now and trying to prep Anna Kate for the shock of not being a baby anymore.

Comeback soon and check out more updates!!

Pomp and Circumstance

Last week, I walked out of Dr. Alan Frazier's Comerical Banking class. In a short few moments I realized that I had just finished my last undergraduate class EVER!!! My first class at Harding was Dr. Ireland's New Testament Survey in the fall of 2004. I met my wife in that class. The last few years have been a wild ride.

We certainly didn't choose the easiest path. Marriage at a young age, having a baby a year later, a second by 23. Not the way I ever thought it would be, but better than I could have planned. The fact that in a few days we will be college graduates is a big source of pride.

Of course, we couldn't have done it without a lot of encouragement and support from our families. I personally am thankful for my family making personal and professional sacrifices to send me to Harding from Kindergarden through college (and Master's degree hopefully). It is a unique and rare blessing. I hope I am as good a parent.

The past week hasn't been without it's tough moments. Last Friday an email went out regarding a friend of mine, Micah (Rine) Pate. She was reported missing by her husband after she didn't come home from a jog the previous night. Micah was a few years older than me but at a school as small as Harding Academy, it's hard not to know someone. Her dad was a teacher and coach there as well. I had just seen Coach Rine and his wife earlier in the week and it was hard to imagine their fear and pain. The situation went from bad to worse Friday night when her husband, Thomas, confessed to accedentally shooting her in the back of the head. He lead police to the body, was charged with 2nd degree murder and plead not guilty. He is out on bond at the moment and is with his parents in Atlanta.

This situation has really hit the Harding family hard. The funeral was held at the Academy and over 2000 people showed up. I hope that the coming weeks provide answers and closure, the Rines are good people and I hurt for them.

Main thing I keep thinking is this. We never know what the future holds. Be it life or death, as in the Rine's case. Or our post college plans, as in my graduation this week. It's simply a series of decisions we must make. If we make the right choices, we get the desired results. God is the only one who knows for sure...seems like a good idea to ask his opinion every now and then

Two-Tier Baby Cakes

Wow....
Suprises are everywhere these days. It seems just when you think everything is settling down, here comes something else. I think God does this to keep you from getting too comfortable with life and relying on yourself instead of Him. Take this week for instance...

Monday night, Nicki and I were watching 24 over at my parent's house while I was working on our taxes. Nicki had been feeling under the weather for a day of so and was getting a bit worse. Tuesday she stayed home from work and was quite sick. I began to think critically about her situation and decided that there might be a chance she was pregnant but I didn't want to get her worked up over my speculation. We weren't planning on another for a few more years but recently we had talked about moving the time frame up.

By Wednesday, she suspected it too and I was off to Walgreens for the test. sure enough...positive. We are going to have a baby. I am actually very excited. We didn't have maternity coverage (though we talked a few weeks ago about getting it) and so I spent most of today calling around to get a ballpark on what it costs to have a baby. We qualified for Medicaid last time but there's no way that's happening now. Interestingly enough it's about $10,000 for a planned c-section (which we have to have) and wouldn't you know it, we just got a tax-refund (thanks to a first-time homebuyers credit) of about that amount. Isn't it funny how God works.

As you can imagine, alot will be changing here at Baby Cakes...after all this Cake is about to get another layer.
